When people struggle with sex, it is often perceived as a personal failure or inadequacy.
Most people regardless of gender, don’t want to be consistently confronted by what they perceive as their failures.
As a result, they may start to avoid sex or anything that could lead to it. This is a natural response.
If there’s judgment (intentional or not) towards such an individual, it only worsens the situation!
If you are married to a partner who struggles in the bedroom, consistently pointing out their struggles does nothing to alleviate the situation.
What should you do?
1. Deploy Empathy!
If your partner is struggling, try to meet them with compassion instead of Judgment. Criticism, no matter how small, can deepen their sense of inadequacy and cause them to withdraw further.
Ask yourself:
- Have I unintentionally made my partner feel worse about the issue?
- How can I show more understanding and patience?
Sometimes, simply saying “I know this is tough, but we are in this together” can make a world of difference
2. Don’t sit too long in the problem.
Dwelling too long on the issue can create a cycle of resentment and emotional distance.
Instead, focus on finding solutions. If you’ve tried to work through it without success. It might be time to explore sex therapy.
Therapy can help you both gain new perspectives, tools, and strategies to rebuild intimacy and connection.
In sex therapy, the issue will be evaluated, the root causes explored, and interventions tailored to help you enjoy a fulfilling sex life will be implemented.
